A Brief History of Bairro Bento Gonçalves:
Bairro Bento Gonçalves, in Feijó, Almada, was created in the mid-1960s during a remarkable period of growth and transformation on the south bank of Lisbon. The housing complex was built to accommodate families displaced by the construction works of the then Salazar Bridge, now known as the 25 de Abril Bridge, becoming known as the “bridge displaced families neighborhood”.
Inaugurated in 1965, the neighborhood was originally called Bairro Arantes e Oliveira, later renamed Bairro Bento Gonçalves after the Portuguese Revolution of April 25th, in honor of the historic Portuguese anti-fascist leader.
At that time, Feijó still had a strong rural identity, surrounded by farms and agricultural land, gradually becoming one of Almada’s main residential areas. The neighborhood became known for its wide streets, family atmosphere and strategic location, accompanying the urban and industrial development of the region in the following decades.
